Lucky Dube Updates 20 Oct 07

Five men have been arrested by police in Gauteng, South Africa, in connection with the shooting death of reggae icon, Lucky Dube.

Dube, 43, was killed Thursday in Rosettenville, South Africa, in what is believed to be a botched carjacking. He had reportedly been dropping his teenage children off at a relative’s house at the time of the shooting and was declared dead at the scene.

The suspects were nabbed Sunday and are to appear in court Tuesday, Police Superintendent Eugene Opperman said to the East London (South Africa) Dispatch.

Police seized two stolen firearms and four vehicles, including the one used on the night Dube was shot, the newspaper reported.

The men were also charged with possession of stolen property, a charge unrelated to Dube’s death, CNN said.

Opperman wouldn’t comment on published reports from Dube’s friends that the singer was targeted, stating that investigators were treating the incident as a carjacking gone wrong, CNN said.

Gunmen Kill Reggae Star Lucky Dube 19 Oct 07

Gunmen shot and killed South African reggae star Lucky Dube in front of his children in one of the country’s highest-profile murders, uniting political rivals to call for action against violent crime.

Dube, 43, was killed in an apparent carjacking attempt on Thursday evening and police were searching for three suspects, police spokesman Eugene Opperman said. “They allegedly tried to take his vehicle, but then shots were fired and he was fatally wounded,” Opperman said. The murder of South Africa’s biggest-selling reggae singer cast a shadow over the national mood a day before the country’s rugby union team face England in the final of the World Cup. Some callers to radio stations said the South African team, known as the Springboks, should play wearing black armbands. South African President Thabo Mbeki said his countrymen should fight crime together.
