Rarely do you come across a college educated female rapper female rap artist born in the Philippines, raised on the West Coast in Southern California and spitting that fire on the mic. Dj Dona is proudly to present to you Miss Kitty.
Kitty began her quest for rap by writing poetry and quickly incorporated her poetry with beats and has not looked back since. She began her music quest by performing at local events clubs, hair shows, and street fairs and has opened up for numerous acts from E-40, Clyde Carson, Brook Valentine, and many more. Kitty has also worked with artists such as the Eastsidaz, BattleCat, Fred Wreck, Suga Free, and also Snoop Dogg. She’s on the grind and it’s just a matter of time before one of the majors come knocking on her door. Like always we present an emerging star so stay in line but please don’t join the bandwagon later on. She has appeared on numerous magazines and radio shows and currently has the street anthem “From Kansas to Cali” on the KenyaFornia Street album.
What’s good Kitty. let the readers who where your from and all the intro stuff so we can get it out of the way?
Whats good Dona, I’m Kitty and I represent the 619, San Diego, CA. West Up! you know
When did you get your first recording done in a studio?
My first recording was done around 2000 or so and it was collaboration with 2 other Daygo artists.
I know you write poetry. Was the transition from poetry writing to writing complete songs easy?
It actually is quite easy because they are both stories written based on different rhyme schemes and they also come from the heart, at least mine do.
You’ve worked with various people including tha Snoop Dogg, Eastsidaz, BattleCat, Fred Wreck, Suga Free and many more. What knowledge or advice did they give to you or or what did you learn from them just being in the studio together?
Well its interesting you ask that because one piece of advice Snoop gave me is to always be learning when around his camp or any other for that matter. I’ve really kept that in my head and learned alot from so many people I’ve been fortunate enough to be around including the basics like counting bars properly and the importance of publishing, copyrights, and all the legal aspects of this game.
You debut album “Making all dogs Meow” is in stores now ?. How long did it take you to get done and where the readers get a copy of the cd.
The album is in stores now, however, the best way to cop it is online, www.myspace.com/kittykatmeooow or download from itunes.
You know just like I do that this music business is quickly becoming most profitable through online sources. Get ya “net hustle” on people but of course don’t neglect your street hustle, you gotta do both equally. Anyway, the album did’nt take long to complete at all. I started writing in October and was done by January.
I know many people have two sides to Dr. Dre’s west coast musical influence. Some say without his stamp of approval you can only get so far in the music industry while other say he ain’t doing enough to support west coast artists. What’s your opinion on the subject.
Dre definitely has a huge influence but to say you won’t make it unless he approves is going too far. As far as his support of other artists he has obviously made his mark with Snoop and Eminem.
My Favourite tracks from the album is “Get Gangsta” and “get off the wall”. How did the concept for the songs come about
Both of those tracks were inspired by the beat. It’s just the vibe that came from them when I heard them the first time.
Do you also do some modeling coz some of the pics are you doing some modeling?
Yes I do modeling but I’m a rapper first. I also act so I kind of do it all but right now I’m 100% focused on my rap career.
How did the whole process go about recording ‘Cali to Kansas” and how did you end up being featured on The KenyaFornia Street album?
Well, the big homie DJ Dona hollered at me with the track and I was definitely diggin it so I hit Batkave Studios in Daygo and spit that shit real tough.
Any advice for upcoming female artists?
Any upcoming female artists make sure you hustle, that’s the key, and you gotta get your street hustle on as well as your internet hustle cuz fools are gettin rich off ringtones and singles now. Also don’t let no nigga tell you what you can and can’t do of course stay true to yourself. Finally, be about your business, do your research about this business. Learn about publishing, points, contracts, etc. there are many books and other resources, so use them.
Is there any artist, male or female, that you would like to to do a track with or battle?
I’m not really a battle rapper unless someone comes at me then of course I am more than capable of eatin somebody up. As far as who I wanna work with there are so many but a few would be Mc Lyte, Ice Cube, Queen Latifah, Quik, Dre, Rakim, Krs One. The list goes on man and I plan to do something with all of them at some point in my career.
What’s your take on female MCs getting into beefs?
Females in beef is cool if that’s what they wanna do. It’s just like the fellas sometimes its real beef and sometimes it’s over some bullshit. as long as everybody keeps it about the music everything is cool.
Choose either: Def Jam or Aftermath, Crunk or Hyphy, 2pac or BIG, Timbaland or Scott Scorch, Remy Ma or Lil Kim?
Well I’m west coast to the heart so I guess I would have to say Aftermath but I got love for Def jam also. Same with the hyphy, it’s a west coast thing but Lil Jon is the shit so I got love for crunk also. I like both Pac and biggie but again west coast pimpin. Timbaland and Scott Storch are both very talented musicians but I don’t really have a preference; shit if either one of them wanted to work with me that would be cool. I’m not really a big fan of either one of them, however I respect what they both have accomplished in this game, the females I dig are Queen Latifa, Mc Lyte, Marvaless, Yo Yo, Lauryn Hill, and Rah Digga
I know you are signed to Fedha entertainment. How did the whole signing process go down?
I actually own the label so it wasn’t too hard to sign myself, lol
What has been the most rewarding thing so far in your music journey?
My fans have been the most rewarding aspect. To see that I have brought so many people joy by providing my music is a blessing and to see people in the crowd saying my verses and hooks with me is so gratifying and there’s nothing like that feeling.
Do you belive there is a negative bias in the music industry towards female mcs?
Of course. I think that bias exists on any level because society itself is sexist.
If you could work with one artists who would it be and why
E-40 because is my favorite and he’s the most original artist to ever exist in this game.
Name your top 5 current west coast artists?
E-40, Snoop, Dr. Dre, Suga Free, and Too Short
